Traffic backed up on Highway 99 into Seattle due to a barge on the river below. Note the difference in the bridge construction between the left and right-hand bridges. That concrete bridge took a looooong time to raise and lower.

I don't know how many gallons she takes, but the Serenade of the Seas seems to have her own "gas station" here in Vancouver. The next stop for gas will be Sitka, I think. I'd be willing to bet we won't be pulling up to an Exxon station....

It was interesting watching them maneuver this big ship into her slip on the other side of the terminal building on our port side. That ferry just behind her zipped right across her path without even a toot of her horn.

Isn't this fun?? The whole drill took about 40 minutes to complete, and it's serious business with lots of lists and headcounts and checking of sea-pass cards. (The sea-pass cards were like a credit card, and were swiped every time we left or re-boarded the ship.)

The very first thing we did after everyone had boarded the ship was to practice finding our lifeboat stations. Ours was on the 6th deck, port side. They did not make us wear the life vests, however we'd been fairly well indoctrinated via a video playing in our room when we arrived. The ship is still tied up at the pier, by the way.

These are high-tech lifeboats--which are also used as the tender boats to transport us to and from the smaller docks when the ship cannot tie up at the pier. They are motorized, enclosed, and seat about 150 people. They are equipped with plenty of navigational equipment and survival gear for an extended stay off the ship---not that we were planning on having to use them that way!

Six bags, one oxygen concentrator, two people,one small outside view ship's cabin.... Notes to self: pack one week ahead of departure, reduce the amount by half, repack three days before departure, spend the night before departure in a hotel... Thank God Southwest does not charge for baggage and the small bags fit in the overhead bins.

We watched two sassy red tug boats move the fuel barge away from the ship before we left. It's amazing what these little workhorses can do and how fast they can accomplish their tasks. The operation of moving the fuel barge took no more than about 10 minutes.

The flag retirement uses a bonfire in a large firepit. The folded flags are placed on the fire by members of the audience. (The larger garrison-sized flags have to be unfolded to be placed on the fire so as not to smother it and put it out.)
